MOL Danube Refinery — AV3 crude-unit fire

20–21 October 2025

Százhalombatta, Hungary

What happened

Equipment failure and the resulting rupture of a pump caused a major fire in the AV3 atmospheric-vacuum distillation unit at MOL's Danube Refinery. Facility and municipal firefighters contained the blaze; no injuries were reported, and mobile-laboratory measurements did not find concentrations above health limits around the site. AV3 was severely damaged, while unaffected refinery units were progressively restarted. MOL expected the incident to reduce 2025 crude processing by about 500,000 tonnes and forecast completion of AV3 repairs in the third quarter of 2026. This was an accidental equipment failure; no sabotage is inferred.
