Mongstad refinery — hydrogen-rich naphtha fire
3 July 2022 · 05:43–11:25 local time
Mongstad, Vestland, Norway
What happened
A leak of hydrogen-rich naphtha at approximately 520°C auto-ignited at Equinor's Mongstad refinery, producing flames estimated at 10–15 meters. Responders deliberately allowed the gas to burn off while cooling surrounding structures. Nobody was injured, but several process plants remained shut for just under three weeks and production losses were substantial.
