17 September 2024

Agioi Theodoroi, Corinth, Greece

What happened

A serious fire broke out in the southern refining-unit area of the Motor Oil Corinth refinery, Greece's second-biggest, producing large flames and black smoke visible from about 70km away in Athens. At least three helicopters and 11 fire engines responded; three contractor employees suffered minor injuries. The refinery and nearby residents were evacuated, transport links were interrupted, and one of two key crude-processing units was shut, cutting processing capacity by less than half.
