What happened

The bunker-supply tanker Tresta Star lost propulsion control in Cyclone Batsirai and grounded on the volcanic shore near Saint-Philippe. Hull breaches flooded the engine room and released fuel into the sea; an oil slick about 50 meters wide and 2.5 kilometers long was observed on 17 February, followed by further intermittent leaks. All 11 crew members were evacuated without reported injury. Response teams removed oily water, fuel-water mixtures and waste, and official cleaning ended on 23 March. Cedre reported no direct impact at 30 sampled subsea ecological stations. The actual quantity of fuel released was not established.
