What happened
The container ship MSC Elsa 3 sank off Kerala after developing a severe list and flooding. All 24 crew members were rescued. The vessel carried 367.1 tonnes of furnace oil, 84.44 tonnes of diesel and hazardous cargo containers. The Indian Coast Guard initially reported no spill, then detected an oil slick on 26 May and mounted aerial dispersant and at-sea response operations as oil leaked from the wreck. Containers subsequently washed ashore. Official sources did not establish the total quantity of fuel released.
