What happened

A review of National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency records identified at least 10 reported oil-spill incidents across Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa and Imo states during July. Operators included Renaissance Africa Energy, Heirs Energies, Seplat Energy, Oando, Aiteo and Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company. Reported causes varied between sabotage or theft, corrosion, equipment failure and storage-system overflow, with pipelines the most frequently affected infrastructure. Examples included a nine-barrel condensate spill from an Oando flowline at Otua on 3 July linked to a drilled hole; a four-barrel Renaissance spill at Elele Alimini on 8 July attributed to sabotage and theft; a 0.5-barrel Seplat equipment-failure spill affecting seasonal swamp water in Delta State on 11 July; a 17-barrel Aiteo storage overflow at a central processing facility linked to the Nembe export terminal on 13 July; and a 10-barrel SEEPCO corrosion spill in Imo State on 27 July. One additional Renaissance record at Ahoada East was ultimately classified as a false alarm after excavation found no facility leak. This aggregate marker summarises the documented monthly pattern and does not imply one connected event or one perpetrator; the late-June Azuzuama spill is recorded separately and is not counted as a July incident here.
