Njord A platform — produced-water system oil spill

31 December 2024

Norwegian Sea, Norway

What happened

About 75 cubic meters of oil discharged into the Norwegian Sea from Equinor's Njord A platform over two hours and 20 minutes. A separator water-outlet valve had mistakenly been left locked open, while an incorrectly calibrated level gauge prevented the safety system from closing it. A worker detected the spill by chance after noticing an unusual odor; Havtil found four regulatory breaches.
