What happened

Ukraine's Naval Forces said that, operating with the Security Service of Ukraine and other Defense Forces components, they struck Russian military positions and equipment on the Syvash self-elevating drilling platform at the Holitsynske gas condensate field in the Black Sea overnight into 8 August. The Navy said Russian forces had turned the offshore energy platform into a forward surveillance and drone-control post used to guide and adjust Shahed-type attacks on cities in southern Ukraine, monitor Ukrainian aerial and naval drones, and host special-forces personnel and counter-drone weapons. Ukraine's General Staff separately confirmed a strike on what it described as a Russian technical-surveillance post at the platform. The reviewed reporting did not provide an independent battle-damage assessment, establish casualties, or report damage to the platform's drilling structure or any effect on gas production, so those claims remain attributed to Ukrainian military sources. This is a separate, later strike from the reported Syvash-platform attacks in November 2025, March 2026 and April 2026.
