What happened
A blowout during perforation and workover activity at ONGC's Mori-5 well released gas and crude and ignited a large fire. Flames rose roughly 20 metres, scorching nearby vegetation and prompting the evacuation of approximately 500–600 residents from Irusumanda, Mori and neighboring settlements. No injuries or deaths were reported. Specialized crews reduced the fire risk over several days and extinguished and capped the well on 10 January. Andhra Pradesh's pollution-control board later said contractor Deep Industries had conducted the activity without mandatory environmental clearances or operating consent and without adequate safety precautions; it issued a stop-production order and began assessing environmental compensation.
