Shanghai SECCO Petrochemical — benzene-tank explosion

12 May 2018 · Time not stated

Shanghai Chemical Industry Park, Shanghai, China

What happened

A flash explosion occurred while contractors were dismantling internal floating components during maintenance inside a benzene storage tank, killing six people. China’s Ministry of Emergency Management said accumulated benzene escaped from leaking float compartments, formed an explosive atmosphere in the poorly ventilated tank, and was probably ignited by non-explosion-proof tools or work activity.
