Pipeline
Shuqair–Mostorod pipeline, near Cairo — rupture and fire
14 July 2020
Greater Cairo, Egypt
What happened
Crude oil leaking from the Shuqair–Mostorod pipeline — which runs from the Red Sea port of Shuqair to the refinery complex at Mostorod in Greater Cairo — pooled on a busy desert highway toward the Suez Canal and was ignited by a spark from passing traffic, injuring 17 people and torching about two dozen vehicles. Egypt's petroleum ministry said valves were closed and the fire brought under control. This was an accidental pipeline failure, not an attack.
