Sumy high-voltage substations — fibre-optic FPV drone campaign (aggregate)
10 July 2026 · Campaign observed since May, continuing into August; individual times not published
Sumy region, Ukraine; individual substations withheld
What happened
Reuters confirmed a campaign in which Russian fibre-optic-controlled FPV drones bypassed electronic warfare, protective netting and concrete transformer shelters at high-voltage substations in the Sumy region. The Centre for Information Resilience verified four strikes on protected 330 kV substations and at least four on 110 kV substations. Footage showed operators opening gaps in netting and navigating through ventilation spaces toward autotransformers. Because the source withheld individual facility names and coordinates, this is one approximate regional aggregate marker rather than eight site markers. Damage, outage duration and casualty information were not published for each strike. On 4 August 2026, Russia's Defence Ministry released further reconnaissance and loitering-munition footage via pro-Russian Telegram/VK channels claiming an additional strike on a Sumy-region substation that left defense-industry-linked enterprises without power; unlike the Reuters/CIR-verified strikes above, this claim comes solely from Russian military sources, names no specific facility or coordinates, and has not been independently corroborated.
When cited sources give different casualty, damage or spill figures for this event, they’re reported side by side above rather than merged into one number. See how confidence levels work.

Reuters confirmed geolocated strike footage verified by the Centre for Information Resilience for the May-July strikes; the individual substations were not publicly identified. Russia's own Defence Ministry separately claimed further substation strikes in the region on 4 August via unverified reconnaissance/loitering-munition footage released on Telegram/VK, saying the hits de-energized enterprises supplying Ukraine's military-industrial complex — that specific claim has not been independently confirmed and named no facility, so it is folded into this aggregate rather than logged as its own dated entry.
