Terranova — sinking and intermittent fuel-oil leak
25 July 2024
Manila Bay, Philippines
What happened
The Philippine-flagged tanker Terranova capsized and sank on the eastern side of Manila Bay after encountering heavy weather during Typhoon Gaemi. One crew member died. Aerial observations showed a spreading sheen, indicating breached cargo tanks and intermittent oil leakage. The vessel carried 1,468,896 liters of IFO 230 and approximately 27 tonnes of biodiesel bunker fuel, but the IOPC Funds lists the quantity actually spilled as unknown. The wreck was removed in September 2025 after containment and recovery work.
