Ukrainian nuclear-linked substations — nationwide Russian strike

What happened

Russia launched a large missile-and-drone attack on Ukraine's power system, damaging key 750 kV and 330 kV substations and transmission lines used to carry output from nuclear power units. Ukrenergo said eight facilities in eight regions were attacked and every operating nuclear plant in Ukrainian-controlled territory had to reduce load. Grid fluctuations automatically disconnected one reactor unit, while other units reduced output; Ukrenergo's chief later estimated that national nuclear generation was temporarily cut by about half. IAEA reporting confirmed the reactor reductions and grid instability. No nuclear plant was reported directly struck, safety systems operated as intended, and no radiological release was reported.
