What happened
Russia launched two distinct nationwide missile-and-drone waves against Ukraine's energy system on 13 and 25 December. DTEK said its thermal power plants sustained significant equipment damage in both attacks. The 13 December wave involved 93 missiles and nearly 200 drones according to Ukraine and was described by DTEK as the twelfth massive energy-system attack of 2024. The Christmas Day wave caused further severe damage, forced outages across Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa and Kyiv regions, and killed DTEK power engineer Dmytro Petlenko at an unnamed thermal plant. Exact plant identities were withheld, so this is an aggregate record for the two nationally coordinated December waves rather than speculative markers for Burshtyn, Kryvyi Rih or other plants not specifically confirmed in the cited releases.
When cited sources give different casualty, damage or spill figures for this event, they’re reported side by side above rather than merged into one number. See how confidence levels work.
