What happened
The bulk carrier MV Wakashio grounded on a reef off Mauritius on 25 July and subsequently leaked about 1,000 tonnes of fuel oil into an ecologically sensitive coastal area. The vessel was not carrying oil cargo, but held 3,894 tonnes of low-sulfur fuel oil, 207 tonnes of diesel and 90 tonnes of lubricant. Responders removed about 3,000 tonnes before the ship broke in two on 15 August. This was a maritime accident, not an attack.
