Wandoo field export system — petroleum spill

11 December 2025

Offshore Pilbara, Western Australia

What happened

An unplanned petroleum release occurred from Vermilion Oil & Gas Australia's Wandoo export system. Following the spill and a separate inspection, NOPSEMA identified repeated non-compliance, inadequate inspection and maintenance, and systemic environmental-management weaknesses that may have contributed to the release. In February 2026 the regulator directed the operator not to export oil until it demonstrates the existing system is safe and required replacement of the export system by the end of 2027. The regulator described the release as small with minimal environmental impact; a precise volume was not published. The marker is approximate.
