Whitegate refinery — gas-oil leak into Cork Harbor
22 January 2024 · Discovered 09:00 local time
Whitegate, County Cork, Ireland
What happened
A damaged small-gauge pipe at Irving Oil's Whitegate refinery leaked 14.2 cubic meters of gas oil onto adjacent marshland and into Cork Harbor. The leak was contained by 13:00 and the equipment repaired that evening. By 8 February, response teams had recovered about 12.5 cubic meters for reprocessing; shoreline cleaning and ecological monitoring continued, with no observed effects on bird or fish populations reported at that stage. The Irish EPA did not report a refinery shutdown.
