What happened

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said a joint line patrol discovered on 9 August that vandals had removed critical structural bracing from towers N9, J4, N10, N11 and N12 in Akwa Ibom State, causing all five to collapse. Inspectors found that members had also been removed and stolen from towers J3, N8, N13, N14, N15, N18 and N19, leaving seven additional towers at risk of collapse. TCN reconfigured the network to prioritize supply to Ekim transmission station; it said this left Ibom Power as the only station without supply while emergency reconstruction was mobilized. Security agencies were notified. The public report did not identify suspects, publish the voltage or name of the affected line, quantify lost generation or customers, or provide exact tower coordinates, so the marker is an approximate Akwa Ibom reference rather than an asserted impact position.
