What happened

JNIM fighters reportedly sabotaged a section of a high-voltage transmission line belonging to the Organisation pour la Mise en Valeur du Fleuve Sénégal (OMVS) on Malian territory, part of the network carrying power from the Manantali hydroelectric dam to Bamako and, to a lesser extent, Senegal and Mauritania. Sources cited by journalist Serge Daniel said the attackers were also threatening the Manantali power plant itself. The sabotage contributed to prolonged power and water cuts in Bamako, forcing residents to rely on wells and solar-powered boreholes, compounding the fuel shortages already caused by JNIM's blockade of road convoys since September 2025. A separate, still-unattributed sabotage of the same Bamako–Manantali line was reported roughly two months later, in early July 2026.
