BPCL Mumbai refinery, Mahul — hydrocracker explosion and fire

8 August 2018

Mahul, Chembur, Mumbai, India

What happened

A fire broke out in the compressor shed of a hydrocracker plant at Bharat Petroleum's Mumbai refinery in Mahul, Chembur, after a leak of an oil-water mixture in an adjoining plant. Heat buildup caused an explosion heard several kilometers away. 43 workers were injured, several seriously; the hydrocracker unit was shut for around two months while BPCL adjusted its crude mix. This was an accidental industrial incident, not an attack.
