What happened

Ukraine's General Staff said a 4 October strike damaged elements of two gas-treatment units, U-172 and U-272, and the U-1731 secondary-distillation block at Gazprom's Astrakhan gas-processing plant. The statement, published on 7 October as a follow-up battle-damage assessment, described the plant's project capacity as up to 12 billion cubic metres of reservoir gas a year and technical-sulfur production as up to 3.5 million tonnes annually. Those are design and production-context figures, not confirmed losses from this attack. No Russian operator assessment, independent imagery review, casualty report, shutdown confirmation or repair timetable was identified in the reviewed reporting. The unit damage therefore remains an attributed Ukrainian military assessment. This is a separate, renewed incident from the plant's earlier 2025 and 2026 strikes.
