ExxonMobil Baytown refinery — hydrotreater fire

23 December 2021

Baytown, Texas, United States

What happened

Contractors repairing a bypass-line leak on a shut-down hydrotreater unit were swapping flange bolts around 12:50am when the pipe holding the flange ruptured, releasing hydrocarbons that ignited; the resulting fire burned for nearly eight hours. Four contractors were injured, three airlifted for treatment, with no fatalities. This was an accidental industrial incident, not an attack.
