What happened

An unidentified explosive-carrying drone entered Bulgarian airspace from Romania and detonated in a field about 100 metres inside Bulgaria and roughly 1,000 metres from a compressor station on the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline near the former Kardam border checkpoint. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev said Romanian border police heard the drone before a Bulgarian border patrol heard the explosion; neither country's systems detected it in flight. No casualties or damage to buildings, the pipeline or other infrastructure were reported. Bulgaria's defence ministry said preliminary wreckage analysis indicated a Maya-type decoy drone used by Ukrainian forces and assessed the incident as probably accidental. Ukraine said it was investigating but denied deliberately targeting Bulgaria. Radev ordered counter-drone capabilities moved from the Turkish border to the Romanian frontier, while Bulgaria opened an investigation into the aircraft's origin and flight. The pipeline forms part of a regional gas corridor linking networks in southeastern and central Europe.
