Cardón refinery — licensed-refinery process fire

22 March 2024

Punta Cardón, Falcón, Venezuela

What happened

A gasoline leak ignited following an explosion at Venezuela's Cardón refinery around 5am, with the fire spreading to a power substation and forcing three in-service crude-distillation units offline. Two workers were injured, one with burns to an arm and one with burns to hair and face; the fire was extinguished within a couple of hours. This was an accidental incident at a licensed industrial refinery, not an attack.
