HPCL Rajasthan refinery, Pachpadra — CDU fire before inauguration

20 April 2026

Pachpadra, Balotra, Rajasthan, India

What happened

A fire broke out in the crude distillation unit at the newly built HPCL Rajasthan refinery-cum-petrochemical complex in Pachpadra, a day before its scheduled inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Dozens of fire tenders from Balotra and nearby areas doused the blaze within about two hours; no casualties were reported. The inauguration was postponed and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said a new date would be announced, with an official investigation opened into the cause. This was an accidental industrial incident, not an attack.
