The IRGC said its naval forces targeted two U.S. vessels and eight oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz in response to the 8 September U.S. strikes on five Iranian tankers. A statement carried by Tasnim also referred to ten 'violating ships' allegedly attempting to cross what Iran called a prohibited and unsafe zone with U.S. encouragement and support. The available wording does not make clear whether those ten ships are the same set of two U.S. vessels plus eight tankers or an additional group, so this record does not infer a twenty-vessel total. No vessel names, weapon types, precise locations, authenticated impact imagery, casualty figures or pollution assessment were supplied in the reviewed report. CENTCOM later directly rejected the IRGC's assertion that two U.S. destroyers were struck, saying no U.S. Navy warship had been hit and all attempted attacks failed. No reviewed flag-state, shipowner or independent maritime-security account confirms hits on the other claimed targets.
