What happened

Ukraine's General Staff said Ukrainian forces struck the Kirishi oil refinery overnight on 30 August, and reported a fire on the facility's territory. Leningrad Oblast Governor Alexander Drozdenko separately said a drone crashed near a refinery in the Kirishi district and caused a fire; he reported that 62 drones were intercepted across the region. The Kirishi refinery, also known as KINEF, is one of Russia's largest and the only major refinery in the country's northwest. The Kyiv Independent described it as Russia's second-largest refinery, reported capacity of about 20 million tonnes per year and said it produces fuel used by the Russian armed forces. The facility is also subject to US sanctions. Public reporting reviewed at entry time did not establish which processing units were hit, whether crude processing stopped, the duration of any outage, casualties or environmental impact. This record therefore documents the renewed strike and fire but does not infer a shutdown or quantify lost production. It is separate from the site's March 2025 and March 2026 incidents already recorded on the map.
