Indian Oil Gujarat (Koyali) refinery — benzene tank fire
11 November 2024
Koyali, Vadodara, Gujarat, India
What happened
A fire began while contract laboratory personnel sampled benzene from 1,000 kL tank 68 at Indian Oil's Gujarat Refinery and spread to nearby tank 65. Both tanks burned completely and their roofs were blown roughly 30 and 100 meters away. India's Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization recorded two fatalities and one injury, and concluded that static charge generated during sampling probably ignited the benzene. Refinery operations returned to normal the next day. This was an accidental industrial incident, not an attack.
