What happened

Shareholders of Refining NZ voted 99% in favor to end crude refining at Marsden Point — New Zealand's only refinery — and convert it into an import-only fuel terminal, after a 2021 net loss of NZ$552.6 million driven by weak Asian refining margins, mega-refinery competition and COVID-era demand declines. Refining ended on 31 March 2022, leaving New Zealand without a domestic refinery. This was a voluntary commercial closure, not an incident or attack.
