What happened
Gas leaking from an underground pipeline accumulated inside a mosque in Fatullah, Narayanganj, during evening prayers. Fire officials said the sealed windows allowed gas to build up, and a spark from an air conditioner being switched on triggered the explosion. At least 24 people were killed, including a seven-year-old boy, and dozens more were treated for severe burns covering up to 90 percent of their bodies. The disaster prompted scrutiny of Bangladesh's state gas-distribution infrastructure and illegal pipeline connections in the area.
