What happened

Gas leaking from an ONGC pipeline running from an offshore source through the Yanam area ignited near Island No. 3 and Dariyalathippa, approximately 400 metres from shore. Flames were visible across the surrounding area and prompted warnings to nearby villages. ONGC isolated the offshore gas supply, after which the fire was extinguished. The company reported no deaths, injuries or property loss and suspended the affected operation pending a root-cause investigation. Local reporting described mangrove damage and residents' concern about previous leaks, but did not quantify the environmental impact.
