What happened
Pipeline gas leaked into the Shengwang Erniu barbecue restaurant at 222 Taiyuan South Street during work to connect a replacement urban gas main. Investigators found that workers opened an inlet flange and failed to seal it effectively, allowing gas to accumulate for approximately three hours and 25 minutes before a spark from a refrigerated display cabinet ignited it. The blast killed five people, seriously injured three and lightly injured 49, for 52 injuries in total. The final investigation classified it as a production-safety responsibility accident and superseded early reports of three deaths and more than 30 injuries. The marker is approximate at street level rather than a claimed building coordinate.
