New American Oil refinery, Plaza Huincul — licensed-refinery explosion
22 September 2022
Plaza Huincul, Neuquén, Argentina
What happened
An early-morning explosion hit a main crude-oil storage tank at the New American Oil refinery in Plaza Huincul, igniting a major fire that destroyed six trucks. Three night-shift workers producing diesel fuel were killed. Later drone inspections found missing pressure valves and gaps in some crude-storage tanks; the precise cause remained contested in subsequent court proceedings. This was an accidental incident at a licensed industrial refinery, not an attack.
