What happened

Three additional Nord Stream 1 and 2 rupture areas were documented northeast of Bornholm and are grouped in this marker for map clarity. After a joint investigation, Copenhagen Police and the Danish Security and Intelligence Service concluded that the explosions were deliberate sabotage, but said there were insufficient grounds to pursue a criminal case in Denmark. Germany has since brought its own criminal case: prosecutors charged former Ukrainian officer Serhii K. with organizing the operation and, around 19 August 2026, a second suspect — a Ukrainian national identified as Vladimir Z. and described as a trained scuba diver — was arrested in Pula, Croatia on a European arrest warrant and faces extradition to Germany to join the case. German prosecutors said the alleged objective was to permanently halt gas deliveries and deny Russia gas-trade revenue funding its war effort; Ukraine has not substantively responded to the allegations, and no conviction has been secured.
