Panjin Haoye refinery — alkylation unit explosion

15 January 2023

Panjin, Liaoning, China

What happened

An explosion occurred during maintenance work at an alkylation facility at Panjin Haoye Chemical, an independent refinery and petrochemical producer in Liaoning province. Twelve people were killed, one remained missing, and thirty others were lightly injured; the company shut its entire refining and petrochemical complex afterward. China's Ministry of Emergency Management investigated the cause. This was an accidental industrial explosion, not an attack.
