What happened

An Iranian one-way attack drone struck a triple-wide trailer serving as a makeshift U.S. tactical operations center at Port Shuaiba, Kuwait, around 9am on 1 March 2026, flying at low altitude and slow speed to evade air defenses before hitting the trailer's roof directly, destroying the structure and starting a fire. Six U.S. Army Reserve soldiers of the 103rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command were killed and more than 30 others were wounded with traumatic brain injuries, shrapnel wounds and burns. Multiple outlets, including CBS News, the Washington Post and CNN, reported that the operations center lacked counter-rocket-artillery-mortar and drone-defeat systems, relying only on T-walls designed against ground assaults rather than airborne threats, and that detection systems failed to sound a warning before impact; reporting said this violated Army counter-drone doctrine calling for increased overhead protection. The Pentagon defended the facility's setup, while soldiers who survived the attack later told CBS News their unit had been unprepared to defend itself, disputing aspects of the official account. This was the single deadliest incident for U.S. forces of the Iran war according to the Defense Department inspector general's own casualty accounting.
