What happened

Unknown perpetrators attacked the Turnow-Preilack electrical substation near the Jänschwalde power station using improvised explosive and incendiary devices intended to create short circuits in high-voltage lines. Brandenburg's interior minister said investigators had found a double-digit number of devices or remnants and that, in two cases, conductive material reached the lines. German police and grid operator 50Hertz reported line damage and a brief interruption, after which all lines returned to service; there was no reported impact on the public and no casualty was reported. LEAG described the incident as an attack on the substation through which Jänschwalde generation enters the 50Hertz grid. A 500-megawatt Jänschwalde unit was also temporarily shut, but LEAG said investigators were examining whether that technical fault was connected or coincidental. Brandenburg Police said on 2 September that the investigation includes suspected disruption of public services, causing an explosives explosion, destruction of essential equipment and formation of a terrorist organisation. On 4 September police reported searches linked to an alleged author of claim letters; on 5 September they announced a search for a 48-year-old suspect in connection with substation sabotage in Brandenburg, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony. These are investigative allegations, not a finding of guilt. Accounts initially differed over whether rockets were used, while later police reporting described improvised devices and said rockets were not established.
