What happened
A series of explosions struck Saky air base near Novofedorivka in Russian-occupied Crimea on 9 August 2022, in what became one of the most consequential single strikes of the full-scale war. Independent open-source analysts at Oryx documented at least seven to eight Russian aircraft destroyed (five Su-24s and three Su-30SMs, per one count) and three to four more damaged; the Ukrainian Military Center's count was similar. Russian authorities claimed only one death and 13 injuries and denied significant aircraft losses, but Planet Labs satellite imagery released the next day showed at least four large craters and substantial base damage, corroborating the Ukrainian account. Ukrainian officials initially avoided explicit responsibility — the General Staff said only that Russia had lost nine planes in the prior 24 hours — with anonymous officials later claiming a strike using 'a device exclusively of Ukrainian manufacture'; Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi did not formally acknowledge a Ukrainian missile strike until 7 September, nearly a month later. Ukrainian official Anton Herashchenko's claim of 60 personnel killed and 100 wounded lacked independent verification and is not treated as established here.
