What happened

Unknown actors damaged a support of Terna's 132 kV Tolmezzo–Paluzza line no. 416 near Tolmezzo, cutting power to a pumping station on the Transalpine Pipeline and interrupting crude flows north. The pipeline itself was not struck; the electricity supply on which its pumps depend was targeted. Germany's largest refinery, MiRO at Karlsruhe, received no TAL crude for three days up to 30 March at 02:00 CET and ran on reserve stock, while Bayernoil also reportedly drew on reserves. Terna said repairs were completed four days after the damage and reported no injuries. TAL carries roughly 40% of Germany's crude needs, about 90% of Austria's and more than half of the Czech Republic's. TAL denied that its own facilities had been attacked, while Italian authorities continued investigating the deliberately damaged power infrastructure. In June, Reuters reported that an anarchist communiqué had claimed the TAL sabotage; the reviewed reporting did not identify the individual perpetrators or establish that suspects arrested over separate railway attacks carried it out.
