What happened

A fire broke out at approximately 21:30 in the tank area of TÜPRAŞ's İzmit refinery. The refinery workers' union described the affected equipment as an empty fuel tank, while early local reports characterized the event as a gasoline-tank explosion during maintenance. TÜPRAŞ's emergency team extinguished the fire quickly. No workers were injured, and the company said refinery operations continued normally. Some initial reporting described a precautionary worker evacuation, but TÜPRAŞ did not report a facility-wide shutdown. The cause remained under review in the reporting examined. This was a separate event from the refinery's November 2024 compressor-maintenance explosion.
