What happened

Axios and Al-Monitor, citing U.S. officials, reported that U.S. forces fired missiles into the engine rooms of two Iranian government tankers anchored off Iran's coast during the wider 1 September strike wave. Axios described the attacks as the first U.S. tanker strikes explicitly framed as retaliation for attacks on commercial shipping under a new 'tanker-for-tanker' policy. Al-Monitor reported that CENTCOM infrared footage shows explosions at the sterns of two separate tankers. TankerTrackers and subsequent maritime analysis identified the vessels as the NITC Suezmax M/T Sinopa, IMO 9172038 and formerly Susangird, and the NITC VLCC M/T Hawk, IMO 9362061 and formerly Honar and Horse, off Jask in the Gulf of Oman. TankerTrackers assessed that both appeared to carry some oil cargo, a departure from the more usual pattern of targeting unladen or ballast vessels, but the public imagery did not quantify the cargoes. The disclosure followed near-simultaneous projectile strikes on the Saudi-flagged SIDR and Liberian-flagged SENEGAL PROSPERITY, two VLCCs carrying Saudi crude; it remains imprecise to describe both damaged commercial vessels as Saudi tankers. Exact strike coordinates, crew status, damage extent, subsequent mobility and pollution remain unpublished.
