What happened

Heavy monsoon rainfall triggered flash floods and landslides in Trashiyangtse District, eastern Bhutan, on 21 July 2023, washing away a section of the 32 MW Yungichhu Hydro Power Project then under construction; the project's main structure was reported not to have been directly hit. Seven deaths were confirmed (five identified) and sixteen people were reported missing in the disaster, with Druk Green Power, the state-owned company managing the project, describing it as a major disaster. Bhutan's Prime Minister Lotay Tshering visited the site to oversee rescue operations. This is documented as a natural-disaster construction-site and infrastructure-damage event, not an attack.
