Golden Ray — capsize, grounding and bunker-oil releases
8 September 2019
St Simons Sound, Georgia, United States
What happened
The vehicle carrier Golden Ray developed a severe list and grounded while departing the Port of Brunswick with 4,151 vehicles aboard. All crew were rescued. Oil releases affected marshes and shorelines on St Simons and Jekyll islands, although the total quantity spilled was not established. Responders recovered floating oil and lightered bunker tanks. The wreck was enclosed by a purpose-built environmental barrier and cut into eight sections; final removal was completed in October 2021, followed by environmental monitoring through October 2022.
