What happened

An explosion at a petroleum-storage tank at the Gunvor Energy site on the Moezelweg in the Europoort section of the Port of Rotterdam killed one person and injured several others. A Gunvor spokesperson said the incident occurred during maintenance work on a storage tank, and Dutch outlet Rijnmond reported a hired maintenance crew may have triggered it while disconnecting pipelines. Rotterdam police said there was no immediate sign of sabotage and that all possible scenarios, including a workplace accident, were under investigation; a crime scene was secured and the labour inspectorate responded. Gunvor said it was cooperating with authorities. The Port of Rotterdam said LNG terminals were unaffected.
