Salina Cruz refinery — major fire following flooding

14 June 2017

Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, Mexico

What happened

Torrential rain from Tropical Storm Calvin flooded a crude storage tank's containment dam at Pemex's 330,000 bbl/d Salina Cruz refinery; the spilled, floating oil ignited and the fire spread to the refinery's pump room. Pemex firefighters fully extinguished the blaze roughly two days later, on 16 June; the fire caused one fatality and several injuries. This was an accidental industrial incident, not an attack.
