What happened

Libya's UN-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) struck the Al-Jufra airbase in central Libya late on 26 July 2019, a key staging post for forces loyal to Khalifa Haftar's self-styled Libyan National Army. The GNA said it destroyed a drone hangar 'belonging to a hostile country' — a reference to foreign-supplied drones believed to belong to the UAE — along with a munitions depot and an Ilyushin Il-76 military transport aircraft. A pro-Haftar television channel acknowledged the base had been attacked but gave no further details, and no independent casualty figures were reported. Haftar's forces responded with retaliatory air attacks on targets in Misrata, part of the broader Libyan civil war in which Turkey and Qatar backed the GNA while Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Russia's Wagner Group backed Haftar.
