What happened

Aircraft under the command of General Khalifa Haftar struck the runway at Mitiga Airport in Tripoli on 8 April 2019, forcing the evacuation of passengers and a temporary suspension of services at what was then Libya's only functioning civilian airport. The strike came days after Haftar's Libyan National Army launched an offensive to seize Tripoli from the UN-recognized Government of National Accord, fighting that had already displaced roughly 2,800 people and killed at least 27 across the city. The UN's special envoy for Libya condemned the airport raid as 'a serious violation of international humanitarian law which prohibits attacks against civilian infrastructure.' No casualties were reported from the airport strike itself.
