What happened

Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) said it struck the Engels-2 strategic bomber base roughly 800 kilometers inside Russia on the night of 17 July, and President Zelensky described the operation as a 'long-range sanction' against Moscow. Planet Labs satellite imagery published two days later by the RFE/RL investigative project Schemes showed a Tu-95MS bomber with critical structural damage, its tail section apparently severed. The Tu-95 is valued at over $26 million and can carry up to six Kh-101 cruise missiles. This is a distinct, separately confirmed strike from the base's mentions in the 1-2 August and 28 August Saratov-refinery and Yaroslavl-refinery entries recorded elsewhere on this site, which reference Engels only in passing as a secondary target of those nights' operations. No casualties were reported.
