What happened
A U.S. Army soldier was killed at Erbil Air Base in northern Iraq on 19 July 2026 during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone, according to U.S. Central Command. Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton of D Battery, 2nd Battalion, 55th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade (Fort Bragg), was identified as the soldier killed. The death came two days after Iranian strikes on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan killed three other U.S. soldiers, recorded separately on this site. This record is distinct from the earlier 1 March 2026 Iranian drone-and-missile strike on Erbil International Airport, recorded separately, which reported no casualties.
